I was laughing today when my Envoy partner, Barb Chvala, brought in some pictures she found from the 1990s. Hard to believe that Barb, Penny Hatchell, Chris Doyle and I have worked together for more than 20 years. That is a long time to be together — especially in the ad business.
What struck me was our hair. How the heck did I get my hair to do that? Then Barb reminded me: We had a neat product called Paul Mitchell Freeze and Shine. And freeze it did. I remember seeing the magazine ads in Glamour (my book of the century) and thinking, “I’ve got to have that look!” I think that if stock could have been purchased by the gallons of hairspray I used through the ‘90s, I might be rich.
Back to our partnership at Envoy. We share a common philosophy that our work together must be rewarding — and it must be fun. In our lobby hangs a quote from Leo Burnett: “Creative ideas flourish best in a shop which preserves some spirit of fun. Nobody is in business for fun, but that does not mean there cannot be fun in business.” We adhere to this common philosophy, and it has carried us through some times when business was getting downright serious. After all as Mo Borden, Envoy’s administrative assistant since 1987, is fond of saying “It ain’t brain surgery!”
