I can remember when we were forced to wait until Thanksgiving Day to get a peek at the Black Friday specials and sales. It was a ritual in our family: On Thanksgiving, my aunt would bring her huge stack of circulars, and the women would furiously flip through the pages, plotting their routes for the next morning.
I admit, I have adopted this ritual myself, and I have participated in several Black Fridays in recent years. And while I still march to the convenience store first thing on Thanksgiving morning to get my newspaper, we now have a pretty good idea of the deals that will be offered weeks in advance.
Several websites have all of the stores and their specials listed, with direct access to the Black Friday ads. But it has gone even further; companies are now using social media as a way to offer followers additional specials and savings. An example of this is the Lowe’s Facebook page. Followers are offered special perks and can even shop before Nov. 26 for deals.
There’s a part of me that kind of likes knowing in advance what deals I’ll be shopping for on Black Friday. But another part of me misses the thrill of tearing through the circulars for the first peek of what I’ll be looking for in the mad dash on Black Friday.
So what about you — will you be out in the stores taking advantage of the Black Friday madness this year? Or will you look for deals that you can shop for before the madness?
