Wow! I just emptied 361 emails from my trash folder – and that was just today’s trash! I can’t possibly read all of those emails in one day, and so I must have a system in place to determine which to send directly to the trash and which to open.
My spam filter helps me with some. For the rest of them, I preview sender and subject line to decide which need immediate action. This allows me to quickly and systematically review those messages which need my attention:
- From a client – first opened
- From a co-worker
- Industry news
- Quickly skim the subject line – if my eye sees a topic of interest – I open and sometimes share on social media or save to Delicious to read later
- Take mental note of which newsletters are sharing duplicate content and unsubscribe the one that is later with the reporting
So tell me – how many do you get in one day and how do you sort them into “trash” or “treasure” piles?
Let me know and I will send you a really cool Envoy notepad that has a handy 2012 calendar on it!
